87070*** When a culture is positive there will be a reflex for each identification and susceptibility performed

Preferred Specimen
Culture swab of conjunctiva. (minimum 1 culture swab) 

Roll swab over conjuntiva or perform corneal scraping. For corneal scrapings, plates can be supplied for direct inoculation of specimen at time of collection.

Culture Swab (teal green cap) or Culture plate

Transport Temperature
Room Temperature

Specimen Stability
Room Temperature = 1 day
Refrigerated = 2 days
Frozen = unacceptable

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Processing of specimen will be delayed if test is not indicated on requisition. Swabs with ampule not crushed.  Frozen specimen.

Conventional Isolation and Identification Techniques. Susceptibilities will be performed on appropriate isolates.

Clinical Significance
Bacterial eye infections may be caused by a various organisms. The significance of a specific isolate must be determined by considering the specimen source, method of collection, and the potential for contaminating organisms.
