Test to be ordered per Hematology Department instruction to client when Blue Top tube is needed to resolve an EDTA induced Platelet Agglutinin.

Preferred Specimen
1 Sodium Citrated (light blue top) and 1 EDTA (lavender top) tube(s). Send both tubes directly to the Hematology Department. Minimum fill for EDTA is 1 mL. Blue top must be a full draw.

Instructions
Do NOT spin either tube. Avoid hemolysis. Gently invert EDTA 10 times immediately at time of collection.

Rejected for gross hemolysis, clotted, <1 mL, improper specimen type, >48 hours old, frozen.

Clinical Significance
Used to evaluate patients suspected of EDTA mediated platelet clumping. Platelets must be present in adequate numbers and have proper function to aid in hemostasis.
